Currency in Vietnam – The Vietnamese Đồng (VND)
The official currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese Đồng, abbreviated internationally as VND.
What Does the Vietnamese Đồng Look Like?
Vietnamese banknotes currently in circulation include denominations of:
- 1,000 đồng
- 2,000 đồng
- 5,000 đồng
- 10,000 đồng
- 20,000 đồng
- 50,000 đồng
- 100,000 đồng
- 200,000 đồng
- 500,000 đồng
Coins were previously issued in denominations such as 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000 đồng, but they are now rarely used in everyday transactions.
One Vietnamese đồng is subdivided into 10 hào and 100 xu, although these smaller units are no longer in circulation.
Unique Features of Vietnamese Banknotes
Vietnamese banknotes reflect the country’s leadership, history, and economic development.
All modern banknotes prominently feature Ho Chi Minh, the founding father of modern Vietnam, on the front.
Each denomination highlights important national symbols, industries, and landmarks:
Lower denominations (1,000 to 10,000 đồng) often depict agricultural activities and rural life.
- The 20,000 đồng note features the iconic Chùa Cầu in Hội An.
- The 50,000 đồng note shows the historic Phu Van Lau in Huế.
- The 100,000 đồng note depicts the Temple of Literature in Hanoi.
- The 200,000 đồng note features the scenic Ha Long Bay.
- The 500,000 đồng note showcases the birthplace of Ho Chi Minh in Nghệ An Province.
Vietnam was among the early adopters in Southeast Asia of polymer banknotes. Higher denominations (from 10,000 đồng and above) are printed on polymer, making them more durable and resistant to humidity, an important feature given the country’s tropical climate.
Security features of Vietnamese banknotes include:
- Transparent windows and holographic elements
- Colour-shifting inks
- Microprinting and intricate background patterns
How Much is the Vietnamese Đồng Worth?
