Currency: Swiss Frank (CHF)
The official currency of Switzerland is the Swiss franc, abbreviated internationally as CHF.
What does the Swiss franc look like? What denominations are available?
The Swiss franc is distinctive in both design and format. Uniquely, all current banknotes are printed vertically, setting them apart from most other currencies, which traditionally feature a horizontal layout.
This modern and innovative design reflects Switzerland’s commitment to art, science, and precision, core values of Swiss culture.
Currently, the following banknotes are in circulation:
- 10 Swiss francs
- 20 Swiss francs
- 50 Swiss francs
- 100 Swiss francs
- 200 Swiss francs
- 1000 Swiss francs
There are also coins in denominations of:
- 0.5, 1, and 2 francs
- 5, 10, and 20 centimes
One Swiss franc is divided into 100 centimes. Coins are often made of cupronickel and are known for their durability and elegant, traditional design. Each coin features national symbols, such as Helvetia, the personification of Switzerland, or the Swiss cross.
Uniquely, Swiss franc banknotes are printed vertically, unlike most banknotes around the world, which are printed horizontally.
