As the holiday season draws near, The Royal Mint is adding a unique touch to Christmas traditions with the release of its 2024 advent calendar.

This years Royal Mint advent calendar offers an exciting chance to own a piece of Christmas magic, complete with a new 50p coin featuring The Snowman.

One lucky recipient will even find a solid gold coin version of the snowman hidden behind door 24, making this advent calendar an exciting and potentially valuable part of Christmas celebrations for coin collectors.

A Christmas Tradition with The Snowman

The 2024 coin, inspired by Raymond Briggs’ classic character, depicts The Snowman in a festive scene, decorating a Christmas tree

This design, created by Robin Shaw – art director of The Snowman and The Snowdog, the animated sequel to the original story – brings a fresh yet nostalgic look to the beloved character. Shaw’s design beautifully captures the holiday spirit and adds to The Snowman’s legacy on British coinage, which began in 2018.

Over the past six years, approximately 700,000 coins featuring The Snowman have been collected worldwide, with fans from over 75 countries adding this whimsical character to their collections.

Limited Edition Advent Calendar with a Golden Surprise

The Royal Mint’s 2024 advent calendar is a limited edition, with only 3,000 calendars available for purchase. Each calendar is priced at £30 and contains a 50p Snowman coin, available in a range of precious metal finishes.

However, the real excitement lies behind the 24th door, where one advent calendar will conceal a solid gold version of the coin, adding a thrilling element of surprise

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at the Royal Mint, expressed her excitement, saying, “The Snowman collectable 50p has become a Christmas tradition at the Royal Mint, and we are delighted to continue this much-loved story on UK coinage.”

The Story of The Snowman

First published as a wordless picture book in 1978, The Snowman by Raymond Briggs tells the enchanting tale of James, a young boy who builds a snowman that magically comes to life.

The story quickly became a Christmas classic, selling over 5.5 million copies globally and inspiring an animated adaptation that aired on Channel 4 on Boxing Day in 1982. Its heartwarming message and timeless illustrations continue to captivate new generations each Christmas season.

The Seventh Snowman Coin

This year’s 50p Snowman coin marks the seventh time the character has been honoured on UK currency, a testament to its enduring popularity and charm. Penguin Ventures, the licensing arm of Penguin Random House, expressed their excitement over the collaboration.

Thomas Merrington of Penguin Ventures shared:

“The Snowman is a beloved and magical story that captures the hearts of many families at Christmas every year. We are thrilled our partnership with the Royal Mint continues to flourish with the release of this seventh coin.”
